Young leaves erect or folded in bud.
Leaves simple, leathery, margin entire.
Bracts 2--4, caducous. ( A leaf like or scale like plant part, usually small, sometimes showy or brightly coloured, and located just below a flower, a flower stalk, or an inflorescence - shedding at an early stage )
Peduncle with annular bract scar. ( flower stalk )
Flowers pseudoaxillary, solitary, bisexual, usually fragrant.
Tepals 6--21, 3 or 6 per whorl, subequal ( nearly equal ) or rarely outer whorl of tepals much larger than others.
Stamens numerous; filament short or long; connective usually exserted (projecting beyond ); anthers latrorse to ± latrorse. (Turned sideways.)
Gynoecium stipitate ( Supported on or having a stipe or stalk ) ; carpels few to numerous,
A carpel is the female reproductive organ of a flower; the basic unit of the Gynoecium.
ventrally: base inserted on rachis ( A main axis or shaft, such as the main stem of an inflorescence, the stalk of a pinnately compound leaf ) , upper part free, usually partly undeveloped,
dorsally: without longitudinal furrow; ovules 2 to several per carpel.

Dorsal.   Pertaining to the surface most distant from the axis; back of an outer face of organ; lower side of leaf; abaxial.
Dorsal Side - Back or abaxial side, or the lower side of a perianth part

Ventral.   Pertaining to the surface nearest the axis; inner face of an organ; the upper surface of the leaf; adaxial.
Ventral Side - Top side or upper side of a perianth part

Aggregates a syncarp, usually laxly spike-like due to carpels partly undeveloped.
(A fleshy compound fruit composed either of the fruits of several flowers, as in the pineapple and mulberry, or of several carpels of a single flower, as in the magnolia and raspberry. )
Mature carpels persistent, sessile or short stipitate, leathery or woody, dehiscent (The spontaneous opening at maturity of a plant structure, such as a fruit, anther, or sporangium, to release its contents.)
into 2 segments along dorsal suture or along both dorsal and ventral sutures.
Seeds red to brown, 2 to several per carpel.

About 50 species:
tropical and subtropical Asia;
41 species in China.
